Volunteer Opportunity!
Volunteer Role: Childminding Mentor, Start date September 2015.
To provide support, encouragement and guidance to two childminders in the Growing Kids program.

The Program

Growing Kids is a 10 week program for women and pre-school children, Thursday mornings (9:15 to 11:15) September 17 to November 19, 2015. The parenting skills development program is being facilitated by Robyn Andrews, and there will be two paid childminders, recruited through the West Central Women’s Resource Centre Childminder Program. For the first half of each week, women will be in a facilitated program, in a separate space from the women. The intention is that during this time the children experience an enriched environment, and a curriculum of ideas and resources will be provided. For the last part of each week, the women and children will be together in the circle, so the women can practice the day’s parenting skills and ideas.

The Mentor Role

The role of the Mentor is to be with the childminders, not so much to provide supervision, as to encourage and facilitate their use of resources and ideas with the children. The Mentor will help to facilitate the learning of the childminders.

Review the curriculum and activity resources developed by the Program Facilitator.
Attend the weekly sessions (Thursdays from 9 am to 11:30 am, September 17 to November 19, 2015)
Provide ongoing feedback to the Program Facilitator to strengthen the program.

Experience with pre-school age children.
Comfort working with families from an inner city neighbourhood. Ability to mentor and provide guidance and constructive feedback. A clear Child Abuse Registry check.
