Food Waste No More

Each year, about half of all the food produced worldwide is wasted, with $31 billion worth of food wasted each year in Canada alone (David Suzuki Foundation, n.d.; Vuchnich, 2015). Meanwhile, millions of people around the world are living every day without enough nutritious food to eat in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle – and Winnipeg is no exception. The issues that arise due to food waste have economic, social, and environmental implications and the time has come to start making changes to redirect wasted food to those in need of a helping hand.

Together with 1JustCity, this project will seek to educate and encourage local grocery stores to donate their food waste to 1JustCity, so that this perfectly viable food will be wasted no more! 1JustCity’s Oak Table Community Ministry (OTCM) has set a wonderful example of how would-be-wasted-food can be turned into a delicious and nutritious meal for hundreds of people every week. OTCM has been receiving food donations from their local Safeway, as well as other bakeries and restaurants, to help provide meals Monday through Thursday for their 80-120 visitors. Without the donations from their local Safeway, OTCM would be hard pressed to provide fresh vegetables and fruits to their visitors – a demographic that is often more susceptible to diabetes and other health issues.

Oak Table Community Ministry is more that just a soup kitchen – it is a place where people from all walks of life and social standing can seek refuge, comfort, and peace. When asked about the work they do at OTCM, Executive Director Glynis Quinn stated that they have “evolved to what people need, and people need food”. Oak Table Community Ministry is just one of 1JustCity’s four community drop-ins which provide food to those in need every week. Expanding the support and redirection of food waste from local grocery stores, restaurants, and other food suppliers will allow these important establishments to continue to grow their communities and feed Winnipeg’s hungry people!
