A message from our friend Anny at the University of Manitoba!

My name is Anny Chen, and I’m a Service-Learning Coordinator at the University of Manitoba, working alongside Susie Taylor and David Arenas. We develop and run programs that engage students in community service and develop their knowledge in social, environmental, and economic justice work.

I’d like to invite you to participate in the development of a Community Action Poverty Simulation for students at the University of Manitoba. Our next pilot is on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, taking place from 12:30-5:00 p.m. on the Fort Garry campus. Everyone 18+ is welcome to attend, and we particularly welcome people with lived experience with poverty.

Community Action Poverty Simulations use role play and discussion to raise awareness about poverty and social welfare in Winnipeg and encourage participants to take action in the fight against poverty. Participants experience the simulation as part of different “family groups” (from single-person to multigenerational families) who must manage limited resources and navigate a network of community services in order to meet personal, work and school commitments.

We’ve heard again and again from participants that being part of the simulation is an eye-opening experience, which helps people to reflect on the impact of poverty and challenges of our social welfare system, and make connections with their own lived experiences, work, and studies.

We want to develop a Community Action Poverty Simulation for the University of Manitoba that incorporates the experiences of privilege and discrimination among postsecondary, Indigenous, and newcomer groups; raises awareness about the problems that poverty causes but also the work being done in the city; and challenges participants to become engaged through a Call to Action.

We need diverse representation from the community in order to create a relevant and impactful simulation, and we hope you will help us!

All the best,

Anny Chen
