Walk A Mile

Have you ever wondered what its like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?

On Saturday, September 29th, you’ll have the chance to do just that with West Broadway Community Service’s annual walk and fundraiser–Walk a Mile in my Shoes.

‘Walk a Mile’ is a mile long tour with over 11 stops in the West Broadway and Spence Neighbourhood. They are locations that represent a resilience of strength in the communities they reside and serve. They are local businesses, not for profits or locations that you’ve otherwise never had the chance to visit. It’s an opportunity for Winnipeggers to learn what it’s like to live in poverty and to raise money for West Broadway Community Services soup kitchen drop-in.

West Broadway Community Services (WBCS) is a “place of belonging, where people who are isolated from community and families can come. They belong here. They are our family and we serve the community together,” shared Lynda, WBCS’s site director.

“Our hope is that people will learn more and have more compassion for people trying to survive in [poverty]. Last year, we raised over $12,000 dollars. It is our goal to raise $15,000 this year and everyone’s pledges will make a difference”.

‘Walk a Mile’ will start at 9:00 AM at West Broadway Community Services located at 222 Furby Street. A ‘Soup Group’ tour leader will guide you along an organized tour of the West Broadway area and Spence Neighbourhood. Some places of interest include, Green Heart Housing Co-op, The Feast Café Bitro, and Agape Table. Each stop will highlight its importance in the community and offer activities for touring groups.

“My favourite part about ‘Walk A Mile’ is getting to know the tour group leader and sharing a personal connection with someone…with someone that you would have never regularly met. Each year, you hear stories about lived experiences, struggles, and triumphs. And that is what brings me the most joy,” shared Lynda.

“People say that they love this place,” she remarked about West Broadway Community Services, “but it isn’t just the place that makes it so remarkable—it is the people who come here that make it so. At West Broadway Community Services, it is about continuing lessons on how to love people,” she shared.

Those interested in participating in the 2018 ‘Walk A Mile’ are encouraged to sign up their teams or you can just collect pledges. Forms can be found at https://www.westbroadwaycm.org/walkamileinmyshoes.htm
